A Participatory Design of Technology and Emotional Connection
The hardware configuration
There are the components which I am going to use in the hardware development. The first one is the Makey Makey , then the Arduino and the ultrasonic sensor, and the last but not least is the balls and bamboo sieve.
In the beginning phase of hardware development, I made the prototype version one point one to test playfulness. I also tried the possibility of many materials, such as aluminum balls and flour. Then I invited participants to touch the edge or the surface of the tray, and agitate the aluminum balls.
After the playfulness testing observation, I found participants prefer the agitation movement which they used a lot in the test. The circular tray with the aluminum balls worked well in this section. So I started looking for the suitable size bamboo sieve.
- Users want to build a "next trip list" from inspirations.
- Users want to explore and share a travel experience, also, make a connection on the same platform.
- The user can completely read and save the inspiration in 2 minutes.
- Users who want to get inspiring traveller’s secret tourist attractions and save them to their next trip list, complete each task in one minute.
- Users want to complete organizing the inspirations in less than 3 steps.
- Age Range: 20s - 30s
- Education Level: College or above.
- Tech Comfort Level: Familiar with mobile apps and social media
- Other Products Used: Facebook, Instagram, Weibo
- Young adults who want to explore their life experience and like to connect to people. The age from 20s to 30s, the group had social media and mobile apps experience, such as Facebook or Instagram.
To interpret target users, I applied the personas to understand who the users are and what motivations they have.
There are three personas I build in this project. There are two personas in the same age, the other one is the oldest age in the target user group. One of the personas had shown below:
Persona A - Annie Kim
- Age: 24
- Work: Accountant
- Family: Single
- Location: Korea
- Bio: Annie graduated for one year and working in an accountant firm currently. Her working hour is from 9am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, Over time sometimes. Even her work is very busy, but she enjoys to read some traveller's blog and some travel guide book. She wants to have a more convenient to travel list tool for her coming holidays. As a result of her job is quite intensive, she expects the experience when she using the tool is casual and fun.

Persona B - Ian Cook
- Age: 34
- Work: Software Engineer
- Family: Married
- Location: Hawaii, US
- Bio: Ian is a big fan of Hemingway, he loves to read his book. He wants to visit the Shakespeare and Company Cafe which just open in Paris. He visited the Shakespeare and Company Cafe, the bookstore in many years ago. It is his first-time travel alone after he got married. His plan is going to visit every place related to Hemingway, and share his experience on the internet.

- Reason for using this product: Ian is a big fan of Hemingway, he loves to read his book. He wants to visit the Shakespeare and Company Cafe which just open in Paris. He wants to exploring the inspirations and organizing it in the same application, also make connection to others.
I prototyped it on paper cards to test out my thinking. I invited my friends who were in my target user group to use this app through the paper prototype.
The prototype testing begins with my demonstration of what to do with each piece of animation in the interface, and how they can interact with the paper just as they interact with the phone. As the result of testing, the flow is one of the important aspects to enhance the usability of the interface, I grouped the pieces of paper in order. Users understand the rough flow of the app, then they interact with the prototype freely.
From the prototype testing, there was some feedback of motivation, flows, and user expectations as follows:
- In the upload section, the upload flow was the part I most concerned. The uploading flow should be simpler, might change to detect the location of the photo instead of choosing the location before select photos.
- After uploading the photos, users expect the page could show the uploaded photo and other recommendation, such as another photo was uploaded in the same locations or place nearby.
- Users expect the inflammation can provide the shortcut of go to maps, or lead them how to arrive the location.
- Users feel that if the bookmark icon shows the count instead of only shows the effect after be bookmarked will make them more engaged with the app and connections.
CONDUCTING THE INTERVIEWS AND QUESTIONNAIRES.
The testing users will divide to two group in this testing: one is the target users, the others are not in the target group. There is few face-to-face interview with users and few for online survey. But the all survey results will be collecting online, so there is an online questionnaire. The face-to-face interview will be held in SCAD Hong Kong campus, users are in the target users group. Therefore, the randomly testing will find some users in the cafe or the library or the church for the rest of the interviews.
In the questionnaire, it will start from some general questions about travel and the social media, such as "Have you try to plan your itinerary from some online recommendation?”. Next, the second part questions are about the use, the satisfaction, and the usefulness. After those questions, there are some questions about aesthetic and their feeling of this application. The last but not least, the questionnaire will end with their basic information, age and gender.
The interview includes some part as follow:
Introduction- introduce this project and what should users do later in the interview.
Users can try the prototype and I will observe them how they interact with it.
I will take a note of users feeling, thoughts and expectations of this prototype and this project.
Then they will finish the online questionnaire.
They will receive a chocolate as incentives.
Considering this online survey includes many multiple questionnaires, so I choose the platform which can be easily used in different platform and I can add a various picture inside.
